Cheap Home Phone Service - Assistance Programs

Many families know about the popular assistance programs that are offered through the Government. Programs such as food stamps, Medicaid and so forth are all available to low income families. What people may not know is that they are able to receive cheap home phone service through government assistance programs, as well. The Universal Service Administration Company has a program called Lifeline. This program offers consumers cheap home phone service by providing families with a discounted service.

Lifeline will usually save families at least ten dollars each month. On average, Lifeline will save families $13.50. Families will also be able to take advantage of the link-up which will cover half of your fees for activation.

To qualify for the cheap home phone service from Lifeline, the consumer does not need to only be involved with food stamps or Medicaid. There are some states that have established specific regulations. Generally, the total income for a household needs to be below the poverty line that is established by your state of residency, or the guidelines of the federal poverty regulations. Other assistance programs that you are able to be enrolled in to obtain cheap service include:

Section 8 housing
LIHEAP
The National School Lunch Program
TANF
Medicaid
Food Stamps

Once you determine if you are qualified to receive cheap home phone service, the next step is obtaining it. Many people believe that they will need to meet with a case worker from a government office. Fortunately, it is much easier than this. If you already have service, you will not need to change providers. If you currently have a service provider, you will be able to contact them directly and inquire about being put on the lifeline program. They will usually ask you to complete a form. The form consists of personal information such as your address, your name and what government assistance programs you are currently enrolled in. You must be honest when completing your form, and provide a copy of the letter you were provided when you were enrolled in the assistance programs.

If you are without a current provider for your home phone, you will need to research which local companies are in your area. Once you have located a few, you are able to contact them regarding their cheap home phone service. Inquire with them about the Lifeline program. Most of the leading cheap home phone service providers will allow consumers to utilize the Lifeline program. If you are able to benefit from the Lifeline program to obtain a cheap home phone service, you will not usually need to provide a deposit fee. Consumers are still able to make long distance calls.

This discount is only available to one phone line per home. The Lifeline program is also available for cell services, as well. Not only are more than 50 million Americans able to receive cheap home phone service from Lifeline, but they are now able to utilize the program for their mobile needs, too.

  1. Interesting article. I’m a very practical person and I always look for ways to cut on unnecessary expenses. I used to have a landline phone service and the cost is quite expensive compared to the one I’m using right now. Switching to Ooma is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made… because today, I can make free calls in U.S. and I only pay for applicable taxes and fees in my area. My phone bill is only $5 per month. Oomais by far the best VoIP service. Check out their savings calculator http://www.ooma.com/micro6/savings.php
